Map & Compass Skills Oct
Date - 03/10/2020
Destination: Burrington Combe, Mendips
Description: This may be the year you explore the UK a little more, or perhaps you’ve got some walking trips planned. Getting outside and having adventures is not only great fun, it’s also good for us. This one day course covers the basics of planning and enjoying a safe day out. You will learn how to interpret maps, use a compass and navigation techniques. Through a full day out walking you will be able to use and consolidate these skills. We use the beautiful Mendip Hills for this course, around 30 minutes south of Bristol by car.
We will discuss and recommend equipment for a safe, comfortable day out and pros and cons of modern navigation equipment. We will look at how to plan a trip including weather forecasts and dealing with emergency situations.
We can make no guarantee about this precise itinerary as we consider factors such as safety, fitness, natural obstacles and weather conditions. With this is mind, we reserve the right to change the plans should the forecast be unfavourable for the day.
Suitability: We aim to be inclusive and encourage a willingness to explore, we also welcome all ages and abilities where possible. This is suitable for people with some hill-walking experience.
Travel: The starting point is at Burrington Combe in the Mendips. It is not accessible by public transport. We would ‘usually’ encourage lift sharing but stress that this is at your own risk, please take all appropriate measures to remain safe. There is adequate parking available..
Kit List: A comprehensive kit list will be provided at time of booking. If you have any questions about the best kit to take then we can advise.
Cost: The price is £40 for one days teaching and includes the services of an experienced and qualified Mountain Leader. The cost is per person and does not include your accommodation, food or travel.
Ratio: Spaces are normally limited to 6 people to instructor to allow for effective teaching and learning. Due to the corona virus pandemic we are currently limiting this to 5 participants and 1 instructor. We spend the whole day outside and are able to maintain a minimum of 1+meters distance. We provide sanitised maps and compasses and ask you to bring hand sanitiser and a face covering.
Cancellation Policy: We need to have a minimum of three people for an event to run. If it does not meet the minimum, then we reserve the right to cancel with 7 days notice and a full refund will be given. We cannot be held liable for additional costs you may have incurred (eg accommodation, transport).
Booking cancellations must be made in writing or email. If you choose to cancel more than 28 days before an event takes place, we will refund you 50% on the total cost. If you cancel 28 days or less before an event takes place, no payment will be returned. We may offer credit towards future events in place of a refund.

While it is likely that we will not be in a situation where a mask is needed for the duration of/ part of the event we ask you to bring an appropriate face covering to be worn if close contact is required or social distancing is not possible. You can use a facemask, reusable or disposable, or a buff or scarf that can be folded to create ideally 3 layers.
